'Lady Michelle' experienced a terrible engine room fire while on sea trials with 10 subcontractors and crew about 4 miles off the coast of South Florida. If it wasn't for the fast crew response to contain the fire the vessel would have been lost . From a first hand account I can report that an oil pressure cap on an engine failed throwing about 40 gallons of hot oil into a 1000 degree engine room area touching hot exhaust locations. The entire engine room became an instant fireball ! Alot of systems such as engine shut-offs and fire pump systems were oddly located in the engine room which was unaccessible due to heavy fire. Manual deployment of Co2 was able to suppress the fire enough , but the fire was not fully extinguished until well after fire boats arrived on the scene. The vessel was towed to Derector Shipyard where is now on the hard pending a vast insurance review . Unfortunately, all but 3 crew were laid off after this disaster but the owner has been an awesome gentleman making good on generous severance . All the victims of smoke intallhation have recovered and we must commend the Captain on having a well trained crew.
