Royal Yacht Norge in Stockholm

Today September 1st the Royal Yacht Norge arrived in Stockholm. The Norwegian King, Queen and Crown prince will spend two days in Sweden during a state visit hosted by King Carl XVI Gustaf.

Pictures of Norge are now available at:

Built as MY Philante by Camper & Nicholsons in 1937 to C. E. Nicholson designs for Sir Thomas Sopwith, the British aircraft manufacturer, the yacht was bought by the Norwegian people in 1947 and presented to King Haakon to serve as a Royal Yacht. Norge is owned by the King of Norway and manned and maintained by the Royal Norwegian Navy.

Not only Rising Sun is serving as a tender for an America's Cup challenge. Sir Thomas Sopwith used his yacht as a support ship in the 1930's when he was competing against the US sailing yachts in America's Cup

In this album there are also some pictures of the yacht-like cruise ship Le Levant. She is quite small taking a maximum of 90 passengers pampered by 55 crew.
For those of you who wonder about the homeport Mata-Utu when the ship is flying the French flag, the reason is that Le Levant is registered in the Collectivity of Wallis and Futuna in the Pacific. This is actually part of France and Mata-Utu is the capital located on the island of Wallis.
The shipping registry of Wallis and Futuna is in some ways a flag of convenience. The crew can be of different nationalities with the exception of the Captain and the First Officer. This registry is an option for French ships that otherwise would have chosen another offshore registry in order to stay in competition.
