Last year Mercury launched its SmartCraft system with the 555 ECM, an electronic control module that, coupled with SmartCraft's sensors, enables boaters to keep track of data from more than 64 internal engine functions. In 2003 Mercury is making what it calls an "incremental change" by introducing electronic controls with its SmartCraft Digital Throttle System (DTS).

The DTS technology, which links the engine and throttles via a single data cable, is currently available on OptiMax 225-hp outboards and MerCruiser 8.1-liter engines. Tom Mielke, Mercury's corporate communications director, says this isn't quite a drive-by-wire system but does enable a host of handling benefits via actuator motors that open and close the throttle and operate the shift linkage. The first is said to be a throttle response of 0.3 seconds. Another is the elimination of mechanical cables, leaving nothing to stretch or wear out after several seasons. This cable-free system is also said to reduce jerky-type throttle adjustments. Mercury says that DTS is designed to "last the life of the boat," and we all know fiberglass can hang around quite a while.

DTS is still in its introduction stage, so we'll keep you posted as to when we can provide you with a firsthand account of the system. Phone: (920) 929-5040. www.mercurymarine.com.
