MerCruiser’s SmartCraft technology is at the forefront of its new inboards and stern drives. The SmartCraft system’s 555 ECM is said to monitor 64 internal functions as well as gather data from external sensors. In addition to the standard input such as speed and rpm, the 555 also measures water, air, and engine temperatures, fuel consumption, and more. The information processed by the ECM allows for automatic adjustments within the powerplant, enhancing overall engine performance.

The 555 ECM also runs MerCruiser’s Engine Guardian system (available on all its new models), which feeds off a network of sensors to determine if the engine has low oil pressure, high engine temperature, or low cooling pressure. If the system detects a problem, it will automatically decrease rpm to a safe operating speed. All engine performance information is automatically saved and accessed for diagnostic purposes via a plug-in tool.

Engines in MerCruiser’s class of 2002 sporting this technology include the MX 6.2 MPI Horizon (320 hp), 5.0 MPI (260 hp), and 4.3 MPI (220 hp). The 6.2 MPI is available as a stern drive or straight inboard, while the 5.0 MPI and 4.3 MPI come as stern drives only with the addition of an optional jackshaft.

Mercury Marine offers a one-year warranty on parts and accessories against defects in material or workmanship and makes parts available 24 hours a day through its Web site, www.mercurypartsexpress.com.
