Continuing to refine its proven and successful 450-hp 450C, a 8.3-liter in-line six, Cummins has unveiled the same block with a rating of 480 hp at 2600 rpm. The 480C-E is a true electronic engine (hence the "E"), with timing and metering controlled by an ECM that is fed by a network of sensors, a waste-gate turbocharger for quicker acceleration, and an upgraded aftercooler and heat exchanger. Best of all, because the 480C-E is all-electronic, it can use the same C-Cruise electronic display as Cummins’ top-of-the-line QSM11. That includes customizable low idle, engine synchronization, an advanced LCD display, backup throttles, prognostics, and diagnostics.

Because the new engine is virtually identical to the 450C in dimensions and weight, power density is excellent. Moreover, Cummins claims that it burns just 25.8 gph at WOT, which it says is "the best fuel economy ever offered in its power range." (843) 745-1620. Fax: (843) 745-1549. www.cummins.com.
