A new three-valve (two intake, one exhaust) cross-flow cylinder head and a new rear-mounted waste-gate turbocharger are designed to improve low-end performance. The engine, called the 3126B, has undergone more than 39,000 hours of endurance testing, including 5,000 hours in Caterpillar test cells running at double the maximum load. The 3126B is also available with a rating of 420 hp, and the nonelectronic 3126 will remain in the line for now, with ratings from 300 to 420 hp. Caterpillar (309) 578-6298.
