The 420-hp 3126 has been a mainstay of Caterpillar's lineup for almost a decade, and now its appeal has been enhanced by a number of major improvements. Most notable is the addition of the builder's most advanced electronic fuel system, the Hydraulic Electronic Unit Injector, which has resulted in a new top rating of 450 hp with essentially no increase in weight or size.

A new three-valve (two intake, one exhaust) cross-flow cylinder head and a new rear-mounted waste-gate turbocharger are designed to improve low-end performance. The engine, called the 3126B, has undergone more than 39,000 hours of endurance testing, including 5,000 hours in Caterpillar test cells running at double the maximum load.

The 3126B is also available with a rating of 420 hp, and the nonelectronic 3126 will remain in the line for now, with ratings from 300 to 420 hp.
