Now part of the Pleasurecraft Engine Group, which touts itself as the world's largest manufacturer of gasoline inboards, Crusader, unlike MerCruiser and Volvo Penta, builds engines exclusively for conventional inboard drive systems--no stern drives. This year it has two new models within its Captain's Choice Series, both using the new GM 8.1 liter V-8s.

The 385-hp 8.1 MPI and 425-hp 8.1 HO both employ GM's fourth-generation multiport fuel-injection system that uses a common fuel rail to supply one electronic injector per cylinder. To supply the fuel rail, Crusader uses its patented Fuel Control Cell (FCC), which contains two pumps and a 10-micron fuel filter/water separator the company says prevents vapor lock, a potential problem with fuel injected engines.

Crusader has also gone to great lengths to ensure the durability of these two V-8s. Freshwater cooling is standard on both the MPI and the HO. Even the exhaust manifolds are spared the corrosive punishment of salt water. Moreover, the raw-water pump that feeds the heat exchangers is made entirely of stainless steel.

In addition to receiving a one-year factory warranty that can be extended for an additional two years, buyers of Captain's Choice V-8s become automatic, lifetime members of Crusader's Captain's Club. During the first year of membership, Crusader provides unlimited free sea towing, fuel drops, and jump-starts. For as long as Captain's Choice V-8s power their craft, skippers are also privy to a toll-free number for parts and service anywhere and are eligible for discounted marine insurance from Sea Safe.
