Interested in putting a dog in your engine room? You might be if it was the Mack Bulldog. That’s right, the same company that powers those big semis on the highway now wants to power your boat. Mack is entering the market with a pair of diesels that put up some pretty impressive numbers. The M-E7 is a 12-liter in-line six with four valves per cylinder and Bosch mechanical injection. Rated at 650 hp at 2300 rpm, it carries a dry weight (without gear) of 2,525 pounds, or 3.9 lbs/hp. It comes standard with a Walker AirSep and is available with either a heat exchanger or keel cooling. The M-E9, which was still undergoing final testing at press time, is a 16-liter V-8, also with four valves per cylinder, rated at 925 hp at 2500 rpm. It weighs 3,400 pounds without gear, or 3.68 lbs/hp.

Volvo recently purchased Mack (part of Renault-Mack), mainly for its over-the-road truck engines. It remains to see what affect that will have on the marine side, since these new Mack engines compete directly with some Volvo Penta models.
