It’s
been a while since we’ve seen a yacht come down the ways powered
by Deutz engines. Once a main competitor in yacht propulsion, the company
has opted out of the horsepower race but still fields a range of pleasure
marine engines, including the Series 1013, 1015, and 616. The 1013 is
available as a seven-liter in-line six with ratings from 223 to 402
hp. It weighs 1,764 pounds with heat exchanger. The top-rated 1015 is
a 15.9-liter V-8 with a maximum rating of 750 hp and a listed weight
of 3,968 pounds for a weight-to-horsepower ratio of 5.3 lbs/hp.
The Deutz series
most familiar to yacht owners is the 616, which as a V-16 is rated
at 1,824 hp. The entire series features individual cylinder heads
for easy servicing, four valves per cylinder, gear-driven pumps, and
symmetrical service points. Electronic governing is optional, and
Vee engines have cylinder banks arranged at 60 degrees for a compact
envelope.
