Whoever wrote
“the more things change, the more they stay the same” clearly
was not referring to the marine engine industry. Over the past decade,
the makers of both gasoline and diesel engines have almost completely
overhauled their product lines and in the process increased power, reduced
weight, and minimized emissions. They’ve done this by utilizing technologies
unheard of just a few years ago. The result has been a steady stream of
new engines of all types, a trend that will continue as we enter the new
millenium. As you’ll see in the following section, there are more
than 40 new engines on tap for 2001 alone.
But the news isn’t
just about product. Following the trend towards a global economy, many
engine builders are combining talents, either through joint ventures or
by outright acquisition. The result should be even more investment in
research and development and eventually more and better marine engines.
These are exciting times
in the marine power industry, and the more things change, the better the
engines seem to get.
