|The Front Nine: Maine to New Jersey|

• You'll consider the trip out to Montauk, on Long Island's easternmost end, well worth the effort as soon as you tee up at Montauk Downs State Park Phone: (631) 668-1234. The course is challenging with greens that are fast and difficult. The wind blows most of the time, and deer and fox are plentiful. Designed by Robert Trent Jones, the 6,762-yard, par-72 is considered the top public course on the eastern end of Long Island. It's best to call in early--days in advance, actually--for tee time. Greens fees are $30 on weekdays and $36 on weekends.
• Greenport, on the island's North Fork, offers up the Island's End Golf & Country Club Phone: (631) 477-0777, a 6,639-yard, par-72 Herb Strong-designed course. The course was in great shape last fall, and the par-three holes are first class. The 15th hole offers a sloped green, water, and the ever-present wind. Stop and take in the sensational Sound view on 16. Green fees are $35 during the week and $45 on weekends. Carts are $30.
Marinas in the Montauk area include Montauk Marine Basin Phone: (631) 668-5900, Star Island Yacht Club Phone: (631) 668-5052, and the Montauk Yacht Club Phone: (631) 668-3100. For Greenport, try Stirling Harbor Phone: (631) 477-0828, S.T. Preston Phone: (631) 477-1990, and Claudio's Marina Phone: (631) 477-0627.
