Most people are
familiar with the threat of carbon monoxide poisoning in their house,
but it’s also a threat onboard. That’s why Westerbeke has unveiled
its new line of low-emission, gasoline-powered Safe-Co gensets. The Safe-Co
series was designed in response to what the company says is a growing
problem of carbon monoxide poisonings and deaths among recreational boaters.
The series, which includes
nine models using two-, three-, and four-cylinder engines, uses a combination
of patent-pending engineering and electronic fuel injection to achieve
a more than 99-percent reduction of carbon monoxide emissions, says the
company. According to a Westerbeke product video, the Safe-Co gensets
reduced CO emissions to less than 3 parts per million (ppm) while operating
at 60 Hz and 1800 rpm. That’s down from the minimum 10,000 ppm the
company says is found in conventional genset exhaust.
