Argonaut Computer is the only company I know of currently making transflective marine displays larger than 10 inches. It claims that the technology, which uses ambient light to brighten the screen, produces the equivalent of more than 2,000 nits in direct sun, while generating less heat and therefore having a longer working life. Argonaut also takes a maverick approach to inputs, providing only a few sealed cables rather than lots of plugs. That means that most source switching and mixing has to be done at the PC level, but also that the monitor can be neatly pedestal-mounted at an exposed helm. The 15-inch display costs $6,975, with 12- and 19-inch models—as well as transflective and marinized laptops—available.
