Transas is a global
organization with deep experience developing ship-level navigation software
and hardware. The company is also responsible for a worldwide database
of vector charts that many of us have seen under the mark of licensees
Nobeltec and Garmin. Now Transas is expanding into the recreational market
with NaviGator. The standard edition, at $299, offers basic plotting functions,
while the $749 Pro version has all sorts of high-end features like ARPA
radar interface and weather overlays. The emphasis throughout is stable
performance and a close relationship with Transas cartography.
Pocket Sailor (shown)
is a NaviGator option and, I think, the first PDA plotting program on
the market to use vector charts. Their solid colors and crisp lines work
nicely on the small screen, and their compact nature is kind to memory
cards. Pocket Sailor works in conjunction with PC NaviGator, whose permitted
charts and routes can be downloaded to the Pocket PC.
