Bringing back the personal flotation device

I remember the constant battle every time my parents and I set out to spend a day on our boat. I was 13, and all I wanted to do was spend time on the water without a personal flotation device strapped about me.

Despite my excellent swimming skills, my parents wouldn’t negotiate the personal flotation device. And now, nearly 10 years later, I realize why.

The Coast Guard reported yesterday that the death toll in relation to boating accidents dropped to 672 last year, 26 fewer than the average number for the past decade.

While these numbers are promising, the statistics behind the causes of fatality aren’t.

75% of all victims drowned and of those, 90% weren’t wearing personal flotation devices.

Although you may be mocked (as I was), maybe bringing the personal flotation devices back out for adults isn’t such a bad idea. Just think how much lower the boating fatality rate could be.
