Cape Scott 74

March 2014 New Boats Notebook

We tracked down the inside scoop on what boatbuilders are up to next.

Cape Scott 74

Cape Scott Yachts is a new enterprise from longtime boatbuilders Dan Fritz and Jim Hawkins. The two are billing their boat as “the world’s safest yacht,” which might sound like big talk, but Hawkins didn’t take any back steps when we spoke. “We’ve looked at what people are doing with their yachts, and it seems eco-tourism is exploding. We wanted to cater to that market. People want to go yachting in areas that typically aren’t yachting areas. Areas where coastal fishermen and freighters go. There are not always the best facilities there. With this boat you can go anywhere because of the steel hull with an inner and outer skin. And in areas that could be struck by an underwater object we’ve put steel that’s 2 millimeters thicker. This boat is ready for the Pacific Northwest or Western Europe, up north where the scenery is fantastic. Because you want to be able to see all these beautiful places, but of course, safety is the prime concern.”

The Steve Seaton design began abuilding recently in Da Nang, Vietnam. She’s expected to launch in early 2015. ( ➤)
