I’ve always had lousy drinking water on my boat and have tried many filters, but none eliminated that flat metallic taste. However, when I installed the Seagull IV from General Ecology, the bad taste disappeared.

Seagull IV uses a “Structured Matrix” filter element that removes not only bad taste but also, according to the company, viruses, bacteria, chlorine, sediment, and pesticides. The three-step procedure includes an ultrafine microscreening process (using a 0.4-micron filter), molecular capture, and electrostatic removal. No electricity is required, and the unit’s built to last. The 5"x5" stainless steel filter housing has a “lifetime finish” and gold-plated ports, and the faucet’s valves are lifetime-guaranteed.

Installation took me just 18 minutes using nothing more than two screwdrivers. All hardware is supplied, including a “T” fitting that goes into the existing cold-water line, and the faucet fits into any standard sink opening. The standard element is reportedly good for about 1,000 gallons; higher-capacity models are also available.

The Seagull IV water purifier retails for $419 and is available directly from the company. —Richard Thiel
