After you read the tales of piracy in John S. Burnett's Dangerous Waters: Modern Piracy and Terror on the High Seas, you probably won't want to go above decks in the dark anytime soon.

In 1992, Burnett was traveling solo across the South China Sea aboard his 32-foot sloop Unicorn, when she was boarded by a group of Indonesian pirates. Handing over what little he had onboard, Burnett escaped the ordeal with a nothing more than a rifle-butt-induced headache. This encounter led him to investigate 21st-century piracy. The resulting book delves into the fateful voyages aboard the pirate-prone tanker Petro Concord, which was attacked by pirates twice in 2000. He also details his time onboard a Very Large Crude Carrier and addresses the proactive measures being taking to combat these modern plunderers.

Dangerous Waters is available at most major bookstores for $24.95.
