Soothe Your Soul By Elizabeth Ginns Britten — April 2005 | ||||||||||||||||
As I write this, senior editor Capt. Patrick Sciacca is standing behind me, explaining how during the winter months he ties knots in his living room in front of the tube; he says it’s “therapeutic.” While I’ll have to take his word on that (my therapeutic experiences generally take place at the spa), I can tell you that knowing how to tie a variety of knots is essential on the water, and anyone looking to learn a new knot for the upcoming boating season or perfect an existing knot-tying technique will dig this DVD. Scott’s Knots is, as its cover says, a clear and concise guide to great knots for everyday use; it’s hosted by Scott Baker, an avid boater and member of the International Guild of Knot Tyers and Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary. The 30-minute DVD takes viewers through the history of knot-tying and demonstrates some popular (and challenging) knots, hitches, and splices like the figure 8, bowlin’, reef knot, eye splice, and monkey’s fist, to name a few. The video retails for $19.95 and is available online or in a number of boating stores. MaxFlex Digital Media ( (604) 886-0250. www.bosunsmate.org.
