The broad spectrum of hull paint

No matter how many color options there are to paint your boat, white still reigns supreme as the most popular one, according to paint manufacturer Interlux. Despite the availability of everything from Fire Red to Seattle Gray, white has come out on top for the last decade. But that doesn’t mean a white yacht can’t stand out. Interlux offers various shades of white and off-white including Mediterranean, Matterhorn, and oyster whites as well as the proprietary Hatteras off-white. Any one of them will ensure your yacht’s appearance is as unique as a snowflake. (

Nisi chose Alexseal’s mocha brown metallic coat for a 78-footer it was building (above), and she drew quite a crowd when she made her American debut in Miami this year. The topcoat was applied in a two-step process to improve durability and uniformity. Alexseal offers this shimmery paint in 23 other shades from pure silver to the yellow they’ve dubbed Gold Rush, as well as plenty of custom colors.

Sometimes the typical color chips a paint company offers just don’t provide enough choice for a discerning owner. For example, Heesen’s first 55-meter (180-foot) semidisplacement yacht, Quinta Essentia (above), displays custom Awlgrip accents matched to the owner’s favorite Montemaggio merlot. Her custom tender features a similar color scheme. The perfect paint can be another way for an owner to display his or her love of a particular Tuscan wine.
