I measured fuel burn on our Tiara with a new program from Rinda Technologies called Diacom EFI Diagnostic Software. Once I’d loaded the stuff onto my laptop and run a cable to one of our Crusaders, I could access data directly from the engine’s ECM (electronic control module). Over 30 individual parameters could be measured, including engine rpm, coolant temperatures, and of course fuel flow. Moreover, I could record data snapshots, create graphs, and access trouble codes. The primary application for the boat owner? Recording readings on engines so that, when a glitch arises, a benchmark exists to help with diagnosis. The software (with cords and connectors) costs $579 and can be used on all fuel-injected gasoline stern drives and inboards, as well as MerCruiser D-Tronic diesels.
