To that end, I found
that the Speedster 200 provides a fair amount of stowage for a boat whose
main directive is to send thrills careening around your cerebral cortex.
The stowage hatch in the bow lifts to reveal a space large enough to hold
a pair of fenders, an anchor and line, or PFDs. I noted that the interior
of this space was finished with smooth fiberglass, not left raw. Amidships,
there’s also an in-sole ski compartment between the helm and passenger
seats, and there’s a third stowage area under the dual hatches that
make up the transom sundeck. A built-in ice chest occupies the console
forward of the port passenger seat.
As many as six can ride
in the Speedster 200. Up in the bow is a seat to either side, which, as
I found out while Wadzinski drove, definitely provides jaw-dropping excitement
to anyone seated there. Convenient (and necessary) grabs are on both sides,
and there’s stowage beneath each seat, also finished. Two additional
seats are aft of the starboard helm and port passenger seats, with stowage
beneath.
Okay, so the 200 has
a practical side, but what is it like to take the wheel? Exciting? Thrilling?
Fun? You bet—all of those and more. I’ve driven several larger
jetboats and PWCs, but zipping along at 55-plus mph on this boat was definitely
an adrenaline rush.
It was a little choppy—perhaps
a foot or so—during my outing, but I found the Speedster virtually
ignored the conditions and handled the water with aplomb. Once I got comfortable
with shoving the throttles all the way forward and experimented with high-speed
turns—which redefine the phrase turning on a dime—I felt totally
relaxed. After that, it was sit back and enjoy the ride. And when Wadzinski
and I visited a nearby waterfront restaurant, I was able to bring the
200 alongside the dock as easily as I could a prop-powered boat.
Whether you’re
looking for a neat little runabout, a ski boat, something to wakeboard
behind, or a jazzy tender for your large yacht, you’ll want to give
the Speedster 200 a spin or two around the harbor. But hold on to your
hat—or better yet, forget about wearing one.
