It was 7 a.m. The rain wouldn't let up. A northeast wind was blowing steadily between 15 and 20 knots. Not too bad, but I would eventually find out it was enough to cause a formidable four-foot chop. I looked from the window of my ninth-floor hotel window and took in the ominous view of the thick haze that lay over the marina. To top it off, it was Halloween. But this was not some fall New England scene. I was in Fort Lauderdale to test Formula's 370 Super Sport. The conditions led me to believe this would be a great way to see this boat in action.

I arrived at Pier 66 Marina at 9:30 a.m. and met a rain-soaked Scott Smith, marketing manager for Formula, and Mark Huddleston, applications engineer for Volvo Penta. They told me they had just made the trip from North Miami cruising at 33 mph. I was impressed.

Before embarking on our foul-weather odyssey, I examined the accommodations. The midcabin is roomy, easily sleeps two--more if you're all good friends--and seemed comfortable enough for an extended cruise as well. Formula has really maximized the 370's 10'6" beam here. Once you rouse yourself from the comfy sleeping accommodations, the single-burner cooktop and microwave just forward of the aft cabin are perfect for preparing breakfast at sea. A Norcold refrigerator to starboard at the base of the steps leading below deck will make sure the milk stays cold, and the full head with shower forward of the `fridge will wake you out of your sea-air-induced slumber.

If you're looking to entertain guests on your 370, you'll appreciate the large UltraLeather lounge, which can comfortably seat six. Headroom here is 6'2", and it extends all the way forward. When you're ready to dine, remove the cocktail table from the carpeted centerline hatch between the two sections of the lounge. When that extra set of guests wants to turn in, just lower the cocktail table and add a filler cushion, and you have a spacious berth.

On a day like our test day, you'll make good use of the optional Quasar TV/VCR and Kenwood AM/FM stereo/10-disc CD changer. Our 370 also had a CD player control at the helm. Ample recessed lighting and four standard Bowmar hatches provide enough light to make it feel like a sunny day below even when rain's falling outside. The curved, Plexiglas sliding door leading up to the cockpit protected us from the weather and further added to the natural light in the cabin.
