The BTB Mako Rodeo Is Coming in Hot

Mako fishing

Just like every year, I’ll be fishing the BTB Mako Rodeo this weekend, June 12th and 13th. The tournament, which is held in remembrance of Brett T. Bailey, who died in the World Trade Center on 9/11 runs out of Hoffman’s Marina in Brielle, New Jersey, and raises money for various charities, many of which are military related.

Plus it’s a really fun time. It’s honestly one of my favorite days of the year, year in and year out. The tournament has produced some really big fish in the past. Both makos and threshers are taken back and weighed at the docks, but all sorts of species have been hooked and released in previous years, up to andincluding monster tiger sharks that will haunt your dreams. Just kidding, but not really kidding either.

The BTB has a decidedly familial bent, and back at the docks there are games and face painting for the truckloads of children in attendance, not to mention a tent and refreshments setup for the adults.

The tournament had 59 boats last year, and $36,000 worth of prize money was divvied up among the winners. The winning mako was a 243-pound beast boated by Hard to Catch. Think you can beat that? Then contact tourney director Art DellaSalla at 212-945-8704 to sign up. Trust me, it’s worth it.
