I hopped down to West Palm Beach recently for the debut of the Rio Yachts Granturismo 56 on the docks at Palm Harbor Marina. In a nutshell, the whole thing was very Palm Beach-y. A light breeze off the ocean, beautiful women in cocktail dresses, older guys wearing blazers and watches that could pay my rent for a year, and a live band jamming with tasteful restraint as the champagne flowed like water. According the New York Post, noted yachtsman and owner of the 414-foot megayacht Octopus, Paul Allen, recently sold his $28 million Malibu beachfront mansion to CBS president and CEO Les Moonves because he “hated the sound of the ocean.”

OK, maybe maelstrom is too strong a word, but when I tested the Viking 42 ST today off of Riviera Beach, it just wasn’t really all that pleasant, weather-wise. The rain was slamming down, the wind was conjuring up whitecaps, and confused four footers made the Atlantic an interesting place to test a boat that easily surpasses 30 knots.
We tend to toss around some hyperbole in this industry. Everything is the best, the most luxurious, the sleekest, whatever. But I mean this in the truest sense of the word when I say that the Astondoa Top Deck 63 that we tested in our February issue is a true showstopper.Read Post
