Divorce, British-Style

By admin | Posted 2012-01-03 10:08

An angry wife who took out her frustrations on her husband’s boat will have nine months in prison for reflection. Police say Mandy Fleming of Kent, England, staged a life-threatening attack on her husband’s 39-foot cruiser when she discovered he’d bought a new flatscreen TV for the vessel after claiming he was broke. The 47-year-old woman went to the docks with a cordless drill and drilled three holes in the hull of the $150,000 Double Dragon. She then opened all the gas burners on the stove in an attempt to blow it up.

Volvo Penta Delivers 4,000th IPS Unit

By admin | Posted 2011-12-20 12:27

Six years after introducing its IPS engine-drive package, Volvo Penta announced that it had shipped its 4,000th unit this summer. The engine manufacturer says its IPS package has replaced shaft-and-strut propulsion on thousands of boats, making them more maneuverable, fuel efficient, quieter, cleaner, and easier to drive. “Volvo Penta IPS fundamentally changed the marine marketplace,” said Clint Moore, CEO of Volvo Penta of the Americas. “For the first time in my experience, consumers start the boat-show buying experience at our booth, asking us which boat brands are available with Volvo Penta IPS. [IPS] owners report significantly higher overall satisfaction than owners of cruisers with traditional inboard propulsion.” The 4,000th IPS unit was installed in a Cruisers 48 Cantius.

Bye-Bye Fly-By Guy

By admin | Posted 2011-12-12 09:24

What would you do if a single-engine plane looked like it had lost control and was heading straight for your cruiser? Take evasive action? Jump overboard? Several boaters did both near South Padre Island, Texas—after which the pilot pulled up at the last minute and flew away.

Rodolfo Gonzalez-Gonzalez, a 20-year-old novice pilot, was arrested in September for allegedly buzzing three boats in southern Texas. Police say the Mexico City man flew his small plane very low near Port Mansfield, as if he were going to crash into the boats, and then pulled up before hitting them.

Close Encounters

Steven Spielberg may have riveted moviegoers with his depiction of the storming of Normandy in Saving Private Ryan, but he only irritated beach-goers when he took his own boat ashore while on vacation.

During a Mediterranean cruise in August, the Hollywood mogul anchored his 282-foot Seven Seas—No. 9 on PMY’s America’s Top 100 Yachts list—off northern Sardinia. Spielberg and several friends, including goddaughter Gwyneth Paltrow, reportedly took the tender for a cruise and decided to do some sunbathing near Porto Liscia—apparently missing the signs prohibiting motorboats within 300 meters of the beach. When they beached the boat and disembarked, a tourist phoned police claiming the tender had threatened swimmers. The Italian Coast Guard showed up in short order.

By admin | Posted 2011-11-04 07:32

John Wayne’s 163-foot motoryacht Wild Goose was added to the National Register of Historic Places in August. The True Grit Oscar-winner bought his all-wood converted minesweeper in 1962 and used her regularly until his death in 1979. Wild Goose earned the special historical status because of its “expression of John Wayne’s personality and outsized image,” according to the agency. Fans of the Hollywood legend can even enjoy the boat for themselves. Hornblower Cruises & Events runs day trips on Wild Goose out of Newport Beach, California.

In September the Oxford Investment Group announced that it had acquired UK-based boatbuilder Sealine from Brunswick Corporation for an undisclosed sum. Maintaining offices in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, and San Diego, California, as well as in Paris, Shanghai, and Sydney and Melbourne, Australia, the Oxford Investment Group is described as a private investment and corporate development group that acquires majority equity positions on behalf of its principals in various business segments, including manufacturing. “We have been looking to enter the leisure marine sector for some years, and it was important for us to find the right business,” explained Selwyn Isakow, chairman of Oxford Investment Group, in a press release. “Sealine has produced some world-beating boats in the last five years, and their success with a rejuvenated brand in a difficult market is a fantastic story.” Sealine launched its newest model, the C48, at the 2011 Southampton Boat Show in September.
