46. TAIPAN - 172'0"
Taipan has an antique player piano as well as a built-in saltwater
aquarium. There’s also a hydrotherapy room if the owners or guests
overdo it in the adjacent gym. Befitting her name, her decor features
some Asian elements, including Buddha statues.

47. BATTERED BULL
- 170'9"
More and more yachts have their own Web sites these days, and Battered
Bull’s no exception, with yachtbatteredbull.com.
There you can see interior photos, including an unusual one of the recompression
chamber sitting in the saloon. Open note to the owners: How about adding
some photos from the dives you’ve taken? After all, what you’ve
seen on your two ‘round-the-world cruises has got to be spectacular.

48. HALCYON DAYS
- 170'7"
The ex-Rasselas is in the hands of a new owner, as her former
owner took delivery of a larger yacht earlier this year (see no. 14).
Judging from charter flyers we’ve seen for her, the current owner
hasn’t changed the classic John Munford interior, which was kept
in immaculate shape since launch.

PALADIN SHADOW - 170'0"
This is the first of a series of “shadow boats”
from a new venture called (of course) Shadow Boats. The idea is to convert
offshore supply vessels and the like into support yachts to be used in
tandem with traditional megayachts (hence the term shadow) or even expedition
yachts in their own right. Paladin Shadow was built as the Clipper
Cap Haitien and carries enough fuel to cross the Atlantic on her own
bottom or to refuel a 200-footer andcruise a few weeks on her own. As
for creature comforts, there are two ample guest suites plus an enclosed
toy and helicopter hangar (with fuel tanks for both categories).

50. DREAM - 169'9"
When Dream was commissioned, the owner requested that the
yacht be able to maintain position and heading without using ground tackle
or engines. Feadship’s solution was a dynamic-positioning system
in which information gets fed to the bow and stern thrusters to keep her
stationary, even in Beaufort 3 or 4 conditions.

51. BEAUPORT - 168'11"
Earlier this year Beauport, a former sounding vessel for the
Canadian Coast Guard, was being offered in a fractional-ownership program,
for $350,000 per share. No word on whether there were any takers; if you’re
interested but want her all to yourself, she’s for sale for $2.4
million.

52. ENTERPRISE V
- 168'0"
Republican Senator George Nethercutt from Washington State and candidate
Pete Coors of Colorado mixed and mingled with various members of their
party aboard this Feadship during the Republican National Convention in
New York last year. Formerly the Amway corporate yacht, she now belongs
to cofounder Jay van Andel.

53. HAIDA - 168'0"
A major refit for a Texan owner is underway: total rewiring, new
gensets, a bow thruster, and more.

54. JAMAICA BAY -
168'0"
With classic appeal both inside and out, Jamaica Bay treats
VIPs like true VIPs: Two of her suites are full beam. No wonder she’s
such a popular charter yacht, available for $185,000 per week.

55. ILLUSION - 166'3"
Not only does Illusion have a 42-inch plasma TV in the master
bedroom, there’s another one in the owner’s study—which
leads us to believe that not much work will ever get done there. No matter;
with six PWCs plus water skis, windsurfers, wakeboards, and lots of other
toys aboard, who’d want to work anyway?

56. LAZY Z - 165'8"
It’s hard to miss this yacht, as her profile is graced with
an intersecting “L” and “Z.” She spent some time in
Palma, Spain, this summer. She has just four guest suites, so everyone
enjoys spacious accommodations.

57. BLUE MOON - 165'0"
If you’re thinking there’s already a yacht by this name
on this list, you’re right; no. 17 is the replacement for this lady,
which has a 31-foot beam and is for sale for $39.5 million. Because she
was intended for Bahamanian cruising, she’s a shallow-draft yacht
(8'2" feet max) and features an aluminum hull; in fact, when she
was built, she was the largest all-aluminum yacht in existence.

58. INDIGO STAR -
165'0"
A yachtsman who also owns a 125-footer available for charter uses
this Italian-built beauty himself.
Y: 2003; B: CBI Navi, Italy; N: Builder; H: Steel; E: unknown
59. POTOMAC - 165'0"
This yacht is a historical national landmark, one of three surviving
presidential yachts. She was used by Franklin Delano Roosevelt. In fact,
there’s an interesting story behind why he preferred Potomac
to the other presidential yacht of the time, Sequoia. Because of
his limited mobility due to polio, he feared being caught in a fire; since
Potomac is a steel yacht, he felt safer aboard her than the all-wood
Sequoia. A hand-operated elevator was installed inside a false stack,
and FDR used ropes and pulleys to move the elevator up and down between
the saloon and upper boat deck.

60. ANDALE - 164'0"
Some people like watching TV in bed, but here’s a twist: You
can watch TV in the master bath onboard Andale.
Y: 2004; B: Codecasa, Italy; N: Builder; H: Steel; E: 2/2,260-hp Caterpillars
61. AURORA B - 164'0"
The same owner has had this yacht since day one and guards his privacy,
so all we know is that her interior is by John Munford.
Y: 1992; B: Feadship/De Vries Scheepsbouw, Holland; N: De Voogt Naval

62. IROQUOIS - 164'0"
Open letter to John Henry, owner of this yacht and
the Boston Red Sox: As much as we Yankees fans hate to admit it, your
ship finally came in last year. No doubt you threw one heckuva party onboard
in Boston Harbor; and to think some folks thought your yacht would have
been headed to warmer waters by then.

63. INVADER - 163'7"
For years Invader has participated in various opening-day
ceremonies for the cruising season in San Francisco as well as charitable
events up and down the Left Coast. She’s also used for private cruising
by Jim Gabbert, a longtime broadcaster and station owner in California.
Y: 1999; B: Codecasa, Italy; N: Builder; H: Steel; E: 2/2,200-hp Caterpillars
64. PRINCESA VALENTINA
- 163'4"
Available for sale (for an undisclosed price), this lady treats her
owners like royalty. The upper deck is comprised of a large owners’
suite adjacent to another suite that houses a gym. There’s also a
private study aft and a private deck area.
Y: 1993; B: Oceanco, South Africa/Holland; N: Gerhard Gilgenast; H:
Steel; E: 2/1,530-hp MTUs
65. TRITON - 163'0"
You can’t miss Triton on the seas. Not only does she
have a pale-grey hull, which accentuates her expeditionary lines, but
she also totes a bright-red helicopter. A great place to be onboard is
the crow’s nest, especially on voyages to ice-laden waters.
