RONIN • L: 191'9" Y: 1993
An ardent admirer
of Japanese culture, Larry Ellison (see no. 6) renamed this yacht about
a year ago to keep with the theme. It’s interesting, considering
Ronin already had a Japanese name when he bought her a few years
prior: Izanami, which in Shinto mythology is the name of a primordial
goddess. Apparently Ellison has no plans to sell her, even with the larger
(and, undoubtedly, more expensive) yacht he’ll take delivery of next
year. But maybe he figures he needs two yachts for two different parts
of the world, as he’s spent time aboard this one in California. B:

PEGASUS • L: 189'3" Y: 2001
Ron Tutor, a Californian
in the construction business, stepped up to this blue-hulled beauty from
a 130-foot Broward. While he cruises with his family, he also values his
private time; should he need to get away from the kids to work in his
onboard office, he’ll be able to work without interruption thanks
to a voice-activated security system for the master suite. You can check
out these quarters—which feature a false skylight above the marble-lined
Jacuzzi tub in the bath—and the other deck spaces, as the yacht charters
for $300,000 per week in the Caribbean and Mediterranean. B: Oceanco,
South Africa/Holland; N: The “A” Group-Monte Carlo SAM; H: Steel;

EXCELLENCE III • L: 187'10" Y: 2001
If you live in
New England and have bought a car in recent years, tell Herb Chambers
if you ever meet him—he likely owns the dealership you went to. Better
yet, ask him if you can take a look at this yacht. (After all, the hard-earned
cash you spent on the car probably bought at least a few of the fixtures,
right?) The interior, by Donald Starkey Designs, follows a theme that
Starkey terms “restrained opulence,” highlighted by rich mahogany
paneling, leather, and onyx. B: Abeking & Rasmussen, Germany; N:

ULTIMA III • L: 187'9" Y: 1998
Is Ron Perelman
a music buff? Given the rockers and pop stars who’ve been aboard,
it would be logical. Mick Jagger was seen on the yacht in St. Barts in
January, shortly after 1970’s sensation Barry Manilow serenaded Perelman
onboard on his birthday, which is New Year’s Day. Speaking of ‘70’s
sensations, actress Suzanne Sommers was present for the celebration, too.
And lest we forget, Perelman’s wife, actress Ellen Barkin (pictured
below with Perelman), was also there. B: Abeking & Rasmussen, Germany;

SYCARA III • L: 185'4" Y: 2003
The third time’s
the charm for the owner of this yacht, who met with success in the car
business—this is his third Oceanfast. He’d originally planned
to call her Mercedes III but apparently changed his mind a few
months ago. He still owns Mercedes II, at 123 feet LOA, launched
in 1996. While the late Jon Bannenberg contributed to the designs of all
three of his yachts, it’s sad to realize he didn’t live long
enough to see this one come to fruition. The owner’s suite is on
the upper deck, benefitting from panoramic views. B: Oceanfast, Australia;

BARBARA JEAN • L: 185'3" Y: 2001
The owners of
this yacht know how to make a grand entrance. Their yacht’s main
entrance has a staircase flanked by mirrored alcoves in which marble bases
support two three-foot-high statues of Poseidon and his wife Amphitrite.
Below them, two hand-carved gilded eagles look across the room at one
another. B: Feadship/De Vries Scheepsbouw, Holland; N: De Voogt Naval

LADY J • L: 185'0" Y: 1976
Lady J is a global cruiser on the market for $3.9 million. Among
her unusual features: nearly full-height, slanted oval windows aft on
the upper deck that spill light into the master stateroom. B: Quality
Shipyard, USA; N: Builder; H: Steel; E: 2/1,760-hp Wartsila Nohab Polars
27.
PANGAEA • L: 184'0" Y: 1999
Are you young—or
young at heart—and into watersports? Then you have a lot in common
with the owner of this charter yacht. Pangaea features water skis,
four PWCs, snorkel and scuba gear, four underwater scooters, plus a raft
of tenders, including a custom 36-foot Predator (complete with fighting
chair) and 19- and 25-foot Nautica RIBs. Pangaea, whose name is
the same as the supercontinent that existed in the Mesozoic era, is available
for charter for $175,000 per week in the eastern Caribbean this winter.
B: Halter Marine, USA; N: Builder; H: Steel; E: 2/1,000-hp Caterpillars
28.
HUNTRESS • L: 180'5" Y: 1997
Huntress
was one of the many yachts that headed to New Zealand to observe the America’s
Cup race earlier this year. No doubt her large picture windows—nicely
oversize compared to those of other yachts—let everyone take in the
sights. B: Feadship/De Vries Scheepsbouw, Holland; N: De Voogt Naval
Architects; H: Steel; E: 2/1,280-hp Caterpillars
29.
PLATINUM • L: 179'4" Y: 1962
Platinum has always been easily recognized due to the two helicopters
she carries. She splits her time between the Florida Keys and New England
waters. B: Fr. Lürssen Werft, Germany; N: Builder; H: Steel; E:
2/2,130-hp MTUs
