London Calling

This summer, London may well be on par with the summer megayacht destination of St Tropez or Portofino.

Not only are megayacht berths being constructed for during the Olympics, but now British Education Secretary Michael Gove suggests that the Queen's Jubilee celebrations should go above and beyond and - perhaps - include a new royal yacht.

Britannia, seen above, was decommissioned in 1997 and is now a tourist site in Edinburgh. She was the 83rd royal yacht in a tradition that began in 1660.

The celebration of the Queen's reign of 60 years will be held June 2-5, 2012. And though it would be impossible for a new vessel to be launched in time, there will be other nautical events including a pageant on the Thames. The pageant will include a flotilla 1,000 vessels of all sorts from work boats to private boats decorated and will be led down the river by the Queen aboard The Spirit of Chartwell, luxury Thames cruise boat.
